Admin passwords? Reformat? Obviously the people complaining about these things know zero about hard drives and instead of giving themselves low marks for knowledge, they blame it on the product! Clearly, the reviews like these are a good example of why online review ratings can't be trusted.
I've found this unit exemplary in every respect. Beautifully made, easily operated and, so far, very reliable. No problems whatsoever.
First of all, of course you have to reformat your disks if you switch RAID modes. That's true of any RAID hardware.
This device doesn't have an "admin password". Storage devices don't have passwords. They don't understand passwords. They understand one thing: reading and writing to blocks. If you've somehow managed to set a password to allow access to a block storage device, it's your computer's Operating System that's doing it, not the device. I have three of these. One a working drive, one an onsite backup, and one an offsite backup. Hopefully this should take care of the extra risk associated with using a raid 0 drive. I get consistant read/write speeds of about 46 MB/s.
The only problem I have is that I can't seem to use the "shortcut button" as a simple on off switch. I find this very inconvenient - I don't need to launch an application with one touch of a button (I can double click just fine) but it is nice to be able to turn the drive on and off without having to reach around to the back.
